September 2020 Announcements

The Composition Program has the following announcements, upcoming events, and updates to share for September.

Registration is Open – Fall 2020 Workshop: How to Engage in Antiracist Classroom Writing Assessment
Registration is open for the Composition Program Fall 2020 Colloquium event, “How to Engage in Antiracist Classroom Writing Assessment,” led by Dr. Asao Inoue, Professor and Associate Dean at Arizona State University. The 90-minute Zoom event is scheduled from 12:30-2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21. Registration is required and capped at 100 participants. Those who sign up will receive Zoom details and instructions for the approximately one-hour of prep/writing/homework Dr. Inoue has asked attendees to complete before the event (these will be sent via email on 10/1 and again on 10/13). This event is co-hosted with Writing Across Virginia (WAVA), so it is also a terrific opportunity to meet and interact with colleagues from across the commonwealth. Learn more and

Composition Program Calendar
The Fall 2020 Composition Program calendar is up to date on HokiesWrite. After the October 21 workshop with Dr. Asao Inoue, the final program-wide professional development event of the semester is scheduled for the common hour, 12:15-1:10 p.m., Fri., Nov. 6. The session is required for all GTAs actively teaching in the program; everyone in the department is welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Looking Ahead: 2021 Teaching Portfolio Award
The call for submissions is posted for the 2021 Composition Teaching Portfolio Award–an annual award designed to encourage the development and collection of exemplary teaching materials from instructors and GTAs. Up to four $400 awards will be made this year. Submissions may be focused on either ENGL1105 or ENGL1106.
